Why this content was created
Created to explain the concept of somatic dysregulation and how factors like perimenopause, male social conditioning, and youth digital habits alter our stress baseline.
Most of us think of stress as something that happens to us. But stress is actually an ongoing physiological process happening inside us. When you experience chronic stress, your nervous system can become stuck in a state of hyper-arousal (fight or flight) or hypo-arousal (freeze or fawn), making it impossible to feel truly safe and calm.
Are you chronically dysregulated?
We have built a somatic assessment that takes your age and gender into account to give you personalized nervous system insights.
Take the Free AssessmentThe Window of Tolerance
The "Window of Tolerance" is a term coined by Dr. Dan Siegel to describe the optimal zone of nervous system arousal where a person is able to function and thrive. When you are within this window, you can manage the ups and downs of life. But when trauma, burnout, or chronic stress narrow this window, minor inconveniences can push you into severe dysregulation.
- Hyper-arousal (Fight/Flight): Racing heart, anxiety, irritability, anger, inability to sit still, insomnia.
- Hypo-arousal (Freeze/Fawn): Numbness, depression, chronic fatigue, people-pleasing, dissociation.
Why Demographics Matter
Your nervous system does not operate in a vacuum. Your age, hormones, and social conditioning play a massive role in how dysregulation presents.
For Women (Particularly Ages 41-55)
The hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause drastically impact the nervous system. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, the brain's stress receptors become highly sensitive. Many women interpret hot flashes, palpitations, and sleep disturbances as pure psychological panic, when in fact, their nervous system is reacting to biological hormonal chaos. Addressing both the somatic symptoms in therapy and the hormonal reality is critical.
For Young Adults (Ages 18-25)
The nervous system of a young adult is still highly malleable, yet it is currently subjected to unprecedented levels of digital stimulation. Constant notifications, doom-scrolling, and the pressure of a 24/7 digital persona create chronic low-level fight-or-flight responses. A targeted "dopamine detox" is often the first step in expanding the window of tolerance for this demographic.
For Men
Due to social conditioning, men are often taught to suppress feelings of anxiety or vulnerability. Consequently, when a man's nervous system is overwhelmed, it frequently bypasses the "flight" response and goes straight to "fight." This looks like extreme irritability, snapping at minor things, or sudden outbursts of anger. Recognizing that anger is often a mask for sensory or emotional overwhelm is a massive breakthrough in somatic male therapy.
How to Regulate
You cannot simply "think" your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. You have to communicate safety to your body. Somatic therapies (like Somatic Experiencing or EMDR), bilateral stimulation (like walking or tapping), and breathwork (forcing the exhale to be longer than the inhale) are proven ways to engage the parasympathetic (calming) nervous system.
